A new elementary school in North Bethany is on a fast track to open in fall 2017, but it might not have a sewer system when students take their seats.Already crowded elementary schools pushed Beaverton School District into bumping up the opening of the new elementary from 2018 to 2017, but Clean Water Services won't have a major sewer line completed."A temporary septic system could well be the alternative solution," said Dick Steinbrugge, district executive administrator for facilities. The district's school design team will work with Clean Water Services on a plan.District staff, architects and engineers gave the public its first glimpse of the future elementary school during a meeting at Springville K-8 School Monday night.The school is a prototype, meaning its design will be used for more than one school. Beaverton is building one new elementary and rebuilding three others over the next six years. The design will be used for at least two of them -- Vose Elementary and North Bethany, said Levi Patterson, architect with DLR Group, which is designing the school.A portion of a $680 million bond approved by voters in 2014 will pay for the schools. Designing a prototype building has the potential to save the district time and money, Steinbrugge said.About 40 people attended the meeting, which was used to gather community comments and concerns about the site. Traffic, student safety and school capacity were the main issues.North Bethany elementary, which has yet to be named, will rise on what is now farmland with a barn in its midst near 7805 Northwest Kaiser Road, north of Northwest Brugger Road.The tinyurl.com/oe67xg6 - septic tank inspections - school design is still in the works, but it will be two-stories with lots of daylight. The architects want the building to have a "heart" that speaks to the school community. For North Bethany, the students will connect with a riparian area that the school overlooks. Architects plan to put grades 1-5 on the second floor and kindergartners and special classes on the first floor. The school will have a commons area and the front offices willhave views in all directions, including the commons area.The school will hold a maximum of 750 students, which was one of the concerns raised by an audience member, who suggested the capacity be raised to is.gd/EGylVN - septic tank care - 850 students."Findley and Springville (elementaries) were full within a few years," he said.In fact, Findley was one of the largest elementaries in Oregon after its enrollment more than doubled to 1,100 students four years after it opened in 1997.The school was built for 690 kids. New elementaries eventually lightened the load for Findley.Springville K-8,which opened in 2008, reached capacity last year with nearly 900 students and was the second fastest growing school in the district this fall with 106 additional students. The district added portable classrooms to its campus last year and this year.District wide, Beaverton saw its enrollment grow by about 800 students this fall, pushing its total enrollment to about 40,300.Beaverton will rely on boundary changes to help balance out elementary enrollments before the North Bethany school opens.
