Day 16-June 4, 2017-To Ithaca, NY

Drove 184 miles in 5 hours

Cloudy, then rain, getting colder, down to 50 today

Drove 1-1/2 hours through small, old towns with old houses and churches til we got to I-88, NY State Thruway.  Stopped for lunch at a rest stop and as soon as we got back into the truck it started raining and continued until we got to the campground.  Only drove for an hour on the Thruway then onto route 206 for another hour and a half through more small, old towns with old houses and churches, some towns settled in the 1770’s and looking like they haven’t had a re-do since then.  The terrain is starting to get hillier and we’re going down some steep grades, some as much as 10%.  And it’s still raining.  The pot holes in the roads have become ditches in some places and we have to be careful.  Up and down, up and down toward Ithaca where it really gets mountainous.  There’s a festival in town but there’s no way we’ll be able to park plus did I mention it’s raining?  The campground is a bit out of town, not too far.  They tell us which sites are open and to drive around and find a dry one.  They’re kidding, of course, there are no dry ones.  We finally pick the best one we can and tromp around in the mud and muck to set up.  There’s no cell service so we have to drive back (there’s no way to walk back with the roads flooded and muddy) to the office to tell them which site we picked.  After the rain finally stopped it looked like the water might recede in the pot holes, but it’s going to be muddy for days.  We looked at maps still trying to decide what to do next and still not getting any warmer or drier.
