Day 22-June 10, 2017-The Amish Country in Ohio and neighbors

Sprinkles in the morning, but sunny and 87 during the day

Took a ride on route 39 in the Amish countryside to the town of Sugar Creek, “The Little Switzerland of Ohio” and saw the largest cuckoo clock in the world.  It’s 24’ high and on the hour and half hour a band of 3’ tall musicians comes out and plays while a man and a woman dance around each other.  Quite a little show.  There was also a car show in town with a lot of antique cars or, should I say, cars we drove as teen-agers.  Also did a wine tasting in town at Swissters where they had a wine tasting on one side of the room and craft beer tasting on the other.  And cheese in the middle.  A little farther east to the town of Walnut Creek to the Amish Flea Market, then to Walnut Creek Cheese Factory, more a huge grocery store than just cheese.  Place was jam-packed with shoppers out on a Saturday, we could hardly move.  Back toward the campground we stopped at Broad Run Cheese House and Winery and tasted cheese and wine, then went across the street to Breitenbach, where we bought “grun schuhe” or “green shoes”, a nice cabernet.  It is named in tribute to a boy who died and is remembered as having green running shoes.  Our last winery was Silver Moon, where we bought “Blood of Zeus” or Sangiovese, Blood of the Gods.  We were talking to the ladies who pour the wine, as we always do and, of course they ask where we’re from.  When we said “Homosassa” their jaws dropped.  The owner lives in Homosassa and travels between here and there quite often.  He’s in Ohio now but not at the winery.  They texted him and hopefully we’ll hear from him.  They said he would love to join one of our wine parties.  It sure is a small world.  Most of the tastings are only a quarter a taste and they’re usually comped if you buy a bottle.  Filled up with gas because we’re on the road again tomorrow.  The horses are still going round and round the track.  Another graduation party is in full swing in the community building behind us with loud music but we’re so tired we slept through it again.
