Day 30-June 18, 2017-To Dahlonega, GA

Drove 166 miles in 4 hours.

HUMID is the word today-not really hot-only 80 but HUMID!!! Rained a bit in the afternoon

Happy Fathers Day!  We drove south on I-75 for about an hour through Chattanooga, TN into Georgia.  The rest of the trip was on routes 76 and 52, the Appalachian Foothills Parkway, aka Trail of Tears original route, aka Mountain Rd.  Up and down, round and round a one lane each way road with no shoulders and nothing to see but trees, streams and the occasional run down shack.  No towns to speak of.  As we neared Dahlonega we started to see a lot of apple orchards.  The campground is in the middle of nowhere but it’s beautiful. When we first drove in we went down a steep hill with horses grazing in the meadow and views of the mountains all around.  It’s a private ownership resort with an R shaped salt water swimming pool, bike rentals, stables with horse rentals and trail rides fishing ponds, gold panning, softball fields, a lake, hiking trails on the Appalachian Trail, pool table, theater room, chapel, rental lodge with a panoramic view, trout fishing, rental cabins, rental houses with everything included, events during the year (we just missed the rodeo, which is why we had to reschedule), etc., etc., etc.  And it’s a Passport America Campground which means we stay at a discount-it cost $12.50 a night.  Our site backs up to a nice little stream and woods in the back, very restful.  But we don’t rest so after lunch off we went to taste wine….what Dahlonega is known for, that and the gold mines.  We went to Wolf Mountain Vineyards only about 10 minutes away, through town where white crosses lined both sides of the street with names of veterans and what war they were in.  Beautiful winery on top of a mountain with great views.  It’s fathers day so it’s crowded with families out for dinner.  We walked through the dining room and saw the remains of the buffet which looked wonderful.  We were going to do a tasting but they only had two red wines we’d like so instead we just got a glass of wine, sat on the patio and enjoyed the view.  Great wines but a bit pricey.  Back to the RV to finish hooking up and have dinner.  Rained on the way back and the steam coming off the road gave new meaning to the word HUMID.
