Day 2-July 7, 2017-To Montgomery, AL and baseball
Drove 231 miles in 5 hours. Gained an hour as we entered Central Time Zone
102 degrees at 9:30 AM, went down to 96 by 3 PM. And humid.
When we first started to plan this trip we wanted to go where we had never been and to get there on the roads less travelled. So from Tifton, GA we headed west on route 82, aka the Southern Georgia Parkway, a 2-lane each way road with a grass divider. Lots of trucks also use this road which goes through farms and fields of melons, corn, peas, okra, butterbeans, pecans and peanuts among others. The dirt is a rich red color which much be great for farmers. Plenty of farm equipment stores, used car sales and taxidermy services in between the farms. Some local produce shacks but they were all on the other side of the road and not easy to get into with the RV so we didn’t stop. We drove through small towns like Ty Ty, GA, Sylvester, GA, the self-proclaimed “Peanut Capital of the World” (although I think a few other Georgia towns have proclaimed that as well), Sasser and Dawson, where the speed limit went from 65 to 35 in no time and which looked like speed traps, and bigger cities like Albany and Columbus where we crossed the Chattahoochie River into Alabama and gained an hour with the time change. Some of the biggest and fullest crape myrtle trees and the tallest magnolias I’ve ever seen grow along this road. We hit some traffic through Montgomery but not as much as I thought on a Friday afternoon but it’s early so I guess we missed most of it. Got to camp and Harry took a 3 hour nap, not normal for him, he’s still feeling blah. Baseball tonight!!!! The Montgomery Biscuits, AA affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays vs. the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. Yup, you read that right. It’s at the Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium, which used to be a train shed and is one of the top rated stadiums in the country. It’s Stranger Things Fright Night in their holiday week and the team is wearing special themed jerseys from the TV show “Stranger Things” that they auction off at the end of the game to benefit the United Way. But as we got in the truck to go to the stadium it started to rain and by the time we got there we couldn’t see because it was pouring so hard. I went to the ticket window and they said there was at least a 2 hour delay but the game would probably be cancelled. So we went back to the RV and the sun was shining by the time we got back.
