Day 4-July 9, 2017-To Starkville, MS

Drove 216 miles in 5-1/2 hours

Still hot, still humid, still 91 degrees.

We’re still travelling on US 82 which is now a one-lane road each way road through a lot of pine tree farms and the Talladega National Forest.  Not much to see til we get to Tuscaloosa where there is an explosion of commerce.  It’s home to the University of Alabama and every store you can think of is here.  From here to Starkville route 82 gets a bit busier with more towns and houses on the way.  We crossed into Mississippi and the first town we got into was Columbus.  The first town we got into in Alabama was also Columbus.  We went across the whole state of Alabama from Columbus to Columbus.  Yes, that’s about as interesting as today was. Oh, and we saw a bald eagle trying to carry off some roadkill. I called for reservations at a few places we’re looking to stop tomorrow and hit a brick wall again…everything’s filled.  But they’re Corps of Engineers campgrounds and I don’t think they’re filled, I think they can’t reserve them because they have to keep them open for walk-ins. Most of the ones I checked are empty the rest of the week and unavailable to book on line until Weds.  I hope that’s the case anyway.  Stopped at Walmart for a few groceries and  got into the KOA to find a note on the door saying that they were closed ‘til Tuesday because of a death in the family.  That’s OK but there’s no map or directions to our site like there should be.  I was told we were sit #4 yesterday when I called but somebody was in it so I called the emergency number.  Ruby, the owner, came right over even though I told her at least 6 times I could easily find my way around.  Good thing she did. As soon as she got here the power went off.  Her husband fixed it but a few hours later it went out again so Harry plugged us into another site’s electric.  If it goes out overnight it’ll really be hot in here.
