Day 34-August 8, 2017-Colorado River Scenic Byway and Wine

Beautiful day, hot and dry, up to 91.

The mountains look so different at different times of the day, all depending on how the sun is shining on them.  Most of the time they’re terra cotta, then red, orange or black.  Last night we noticed a lot of cars going down the road across the street from the campground so we took a ride today to see where they were going.  There’s a big residential community with a big golf course, beautiful homes and spectacular views up a long mountain.  We thought about going to Canyonlands NP but it’s almost 50 miles away, we’ve been there and the views here are wonderful.  We took the Colorado River Scenic Byway 14 miles upriver to Castle Creek Winery.  The Byway is gorgeous, in a canyon with magnificent steep cliffs on either side and the Colorado River in the middle. The river is almost the same color as the rocks, that beautiful orangy color.  It looks muddy but I don’t think it is.  There’s a nice paved bike path most of the way and campgrounds, picnic areas and scenic pullovers all the way.  The winery is right on the river where there is a lodge and teepees for rent.   On the way back we stopped at a pull off for lunch and watched some rafters coming down the river.  They started out on calm water but as they got to us it got a bit rougher, no strong currents just enough to make them squeal.  Back to the campground to relax a bit, we both have good books and it’s a great campground for lazing around, nice and shady with great views.
