Day 40-August 14, 2017-To Sonora, TX

Drove 255 miles in 5-1/4 hours

Same old temp-up to 91, a bit cloudy

We’re still traveling on I-10 East (and probably will be for days).  Very mountainous until we got to Fort Stockton where it got really flat and the wild west Texas winds picked up.  We were getting buffeted back and forth and when we stopped for lunch at a rest area it was hard to open the car door because the wind kept pushing it closed.  Started another book on tape.  Very little traffic and not much to see, some oil drilling rigs, wind generators and the ever present sagebrush.  The mountains have been sliced to make room for the road and some of the rock is really pretty-gold and red.  I got confused about the time, Harry’s watch said one thing, the phone said another and I couldn’t remember if I changed the truck clock or not.  I think I’m straightened out now, if not, so what?  We got to Sonora about 3PM and called Mike from the campground.  He met us in town and we followed him to the site.  It’s not really a campground, it’s a mobile home community with about 6 sites.  Full hook-up, pull-through, nice and level.  We’re the only ones here.  It’s really quite comfortable.  The only other campground around is at Caverns of Sonora.  We were there before and it’s not any better than this and about 10 miles off the road.  This one is right down the road from I-10.  Mike helped us set up, then we looked at campground books again and made some phone calls for reservations for the next few nights.  Our first choice was $64 a night so we had to make a few more calls.  Finally found a campground right on the river for $28.  We both have good books so we sat around and read the rest of the afternoon.
