6th Sep 2011 - 8th Sep 2011 - Europe 2011
On our way home
It's a sad day - we're waiting at Calais for the ferry home. Our 10 week jaunt around Europe has come to an end.
On Monday we had a wander around the chateau at Chambord which had won out in the battle with the chocolatier - just! We then started the journey north to meet up with friends Guy and Kathtryn who live in Normandy - not Brittany as previously reported. Interesting drive in the strong wind which slowed progress so much that the anticipated 4 hour drive took well over 5. Eventually arrived just before 17:00 and enjoyed a lovely evening of great food, wine and conversation. This was the first time we'd had lengthy conversations with anyone other than each other since meeting up with Chris at Bourg d'Oisans all those weeks ago.
Tuesday was spent playing with Guy's son Tobie followed by a lunch of moules and frites (again) at a restaurant in Granville - a lovely seaside town about 30 mins drive away. A quick tour of the area was followed by a quick walk on the beach to exercise the 2 dogs. After a wander around the local Carrefour which had a wine promotion on (where we purchased a few more bottles) we headed off to try and put a few miles in to shorten the journey to Calais. We managed to reach Honfleur just by Le Havre where we stayed at the biggest Aire we've ever seen. It's such a shame that every big town doesn't have one.
Today has been spent meandering up to Calais. Managed to get Linda her Decathlon "fix" at Pont Audmere. We also stopped off at a hypermarket to get some bubbly, more Rose and a bit of goat's cheese. Arrived at the ferry port to find that the cost to cross was over twice as much as available on the net - moral here is book in advance.
Obviously disappointed that the trip is over but we've had a fantastic time. At least we have a week to get ourselves sorted out and have a couple of days watching the Tour of Britain to look forward to.
