Playa Blanca: Donkeys in the night and one dead kitten.....

Sunday morning we caught a cruise ship over to Playa Blanca. We spent the whole journey transfixed by a couple in their late thirties who couldn't keep their hands of each other. They must have had some sort of hormone problem as they were tongue wrestling like it was their last day on Earth. I swear there was a puddle of drool and slobber developing underneath them. Get a room! I don't lik...

Last big bus journey. Hurray!

The bus to Cartagena took 20 hours. That's the last big bus journey of this trip. I think it's fair to say that we're both pretty 'bussed out' at the moment. We didn't do much in Cartagena because we will be here again in a few days after we've been to the beach at Playa Blanca....

Don Elias' Coffee Plantation

We went to Don Elias' coffee plantation today. We've been drinking lots of coffee lately (when in Colombia...) so we thought we'd have a look at how it's grown. Following directions given to us by Tim, the English owner of the hostel, we walked through the countryside for an hour or so until we reached the plantation. It was a nice walk with lots of birds around although it was seriously hot....

Trout and Wax Palms in Salento

Ah, Salento. What a great place. It's a small town nestled in a verdant valley. It has 3500 inhabitants and they're all very relaxed. As we walk along the pretty streets the locals, sat outside their shops, say hello and chat to you about the weather and where you are from. Nobody rushes here. I went for a run one morning and people stared at me as if I was a lunatic. We are not staying i...

45 hours of Travel Hell!

Some people say that the joy of travel is not so much in the destination but the journey itself. Sometimes I agree with that sentiment. Not today. We've just completed a marathon 45 hour journey through 3 countries. I'm tired. I smell. I'm spotty. I should explain the journey..... We wake up on Saturday morning at 9:05am exactly. By 'exactly' I mean exactly 5 minutes after our bus had...

Mancora

We nearly missed Mancora altogether. Our night bus driver drove straight through the little beach town and if the bus hadn't been so uncomfortable I wouldn't have spotted the signs and we would've woken up in Tumbes, 2 hours further north! At 3:30am I noticed Mancora signs whizzing by and ran to the front to tell the driver to stop, which he did...about 3km out of the town and then only grudginl...

Peruvian Taxi Driver in No Knowledge shocker!!

Lima, Peru. I'm sure it's a great city. Unfortunately we didn't see much of it. We stayed in Miraflores which is quite a nice (wealthy, safe) suburb. Our time in Lima went like this:- We spent 1 afternoon getting drunk on red wine, 1 morning (the one after!) trying to work out how we had lost $70 and our Lonely Planet guide book, 1 morning rushing between airline offices trying to find A...

Machu Picchu and pets for dinner!

I like being surprised. It happened today. I was expecting to be underwhelmed by Machu Picchu. I've seen it on tv and on postcards and in books and so I thought that it woudn't be that amazing because I already knew what to expect. I was very wrong. I use the following phrase with great trepidation.........it was almost magical. When you arrive at Machu Picchu and see it all before you it is...

The tourist train to Aguas Calientes

The trekking was easy today. All downhill for about three hours until we reached Ollantaytambo. On the way we passed some amazing terraces reaching right the was up the steepest of mountainsides. These terraces were used to grow the vegetables that fed the people livng in the nearby towns. We had lunch and then had a couple of hours to kill before getting the train to Aguas Calientes which is t...

The pied piper with added vitamin C....

It was cold last night in our little tent. Jose the guide reckons that it gets down to about -5 degrees. Kirsty woke me up in the middle of the night to tell me that she was cold. She was already wearing eveything she owned so, short of setting myself on fire, I don't know what she expected me to do. We got up bright and early at 6:15am to find the cook waiting at the entrance of our tent wi...
