Tirrilstrip12
2nd Aug 2012
Day 138

The day promised much …. And it delivered! Checked out the visitor centre so we could plan the day. Then took Tirril for a walk (spotted a marsh harrier), with a dip in the river before leaving him on guard duty in the van. Nice, sunny day but not too hot, and the van is in a very shady spot.

We had a 5 minute scooter ride to a centre where they have animals traditional to the Hungarian plain – cows, water buffalo, horses and sheep – with various traditional buildings. They’re spread out over an enormous area and so they do horse-drawn cart rides to take you around, and at various points have demonstrations eg of ox-drawn wagons and bare-back, standing up horse-riding controlling 5 horses at once! A really enjoyable outing.

Back to the van for lunch and a sit in the shade – and spotted first a greater spotted woodpecker and then a golden oriole. Lovely. We then left Tirril again to go on a nature trail about 10 minutes scooter ride away where we had some really good views of some hobbies and a red-footed falcon. The birding book has redeemed itself here!

Ran out of time to do a boat trip, and we’ll do another of the nature trails tomorrow – where there’s a little train to take you out and you can walk back via loads of bird hides amongst a set of fish lakes. Can’t understand why the campsite here is so quiet – it’s such a lovely spot. The campsite even has its own thermal swimming pool – really warm, virtually hot, water, but on the down side – it has a slight petrolly smell to it and a very slightly oily ‘texture’ to it.

Having just said it’s so quiet - a convoy of 6 Italian motorhomes has just turned up. Apparently the Italians are prone to doing convoys when they leave Italy. We left them to it while we went to try out the local restaurant which is an old inn that serves traditional Hungarian dishes. Very nice too – and a good price too (although not quite on a par with Romania). Returned to the site to find, to our horror, that the Italians had set up a communal table area right next to our van and were all sitting down together about to start a meal of their own. The conversation is already loud and they haven’t drunk much wine yet. I think it might be a while before we get to sleep tonight!
