Days 142 & 143

Day 142

Budapest Part 2: Another sweltering night. This site is amazingly quiet at night considering it’s right within the city. So it was up, not quite so early and not quite so bright, to take Tirril to another of Budapest’s parks. An underground journey followed by a bus this time. We’ll pass over the spectacle of him going on the escalator again – but we got to the park OK and found some more water for him to have a swim, as well as some ball-playing. Another lovely park, and some very grandiose buildings, squares and boulevards on the way there too. Back to the van for lunch via another bus and then a tram with no histrionics from Tirril (or us).

So we left Tirril in the van again this afternoon and scootered back in to do some more hop on/offing followed by a wander around the city centre (Pest side). Went up the cathedral tower to take in the views (302 steps – although if you wanted to cheat, there was actually a lift here!). Walked through a square with an enormous TV screen showing the Olympics – but what were they showing? Yup – synchronised swimming. We didn’t linger. Carried on and nearly got back to the scooter without mishap, until we happened across a branch of Marks & Spencer. With a Sale on. Need I say more. I suppose it’ll be OK if we need to do an exchange or refund on any of the items though once we get back.

Found a slightly more direct route back, but they really don’t like you doing left turns here and no helpful road signs to tell you where you can do a little loop round to go the direction you want. Anyway, we got back reasonably easy and Tirril was far cooler than we were! Another hot, sticky night ahead I think.

Day 143

As it turned out, a bit of a wind got up and cooled things down a bit last night. We decided to move on today, despite the lure of a 4th night for free at the campsite. There’s still a lot to see here, but we’ve also got a lot of other places to see on our way back and time is running out. But – before leaving Budapest altogether we went to the Memento Park.

A rather odd affair this. It’s a collection of Soviet & communist statues (the ones that weren’t irreparably smashed come Hungarian independence) that were removed from their original sites in Budapest and put together as a reminder of this part of Hungary’s history. There was also, somewhat incongruously, an old Trabant car there as an exhibit.

So we’re back in the hills again now at Paradsasvar, north-east of Budapest. A little site surrounded by treed hills and not many people here. Quite a contrast to Budapest. Will be able to do a good walk from here tomorrow. In the meantime, let’s see how the Olympics are going – we have got a bit of a picture here. And it’s water polo. Again. Looks like an early night then.
