Day 150 Well thank you for that Ann & Chris, but I’m not sure a birthday at my age is much to Get Jealous about! And regarding your later message, I’m glad it was the labs you went for then. So, to mark the occasion of 150 days on foreign soil, and nothing whatsoever to do with one of our party reaching another milestone (millstone?) on the calendar, we booked in to a penzion (small hotel/guesthouse) for the night at a curiosity of a village called Cicmany. The village comprises predominantly log cabin-type houses finished in dark stain, but many of them with various hieroglyphic patterns daubed on the walls in white paint. Made a change from the usual rendered, painted houses. The penzion was fairly basic and informal, which suits us fine, and we had a really good meal (house specialities!) accompanied by a very nice bottle of Slovakian wine. Earlier in the day we had been treated to a fly-past of 16 buzzards as we ate our breakfast, all lazily circling in the air right above us. We travelled on to Bojnice castle – a sort of Disney-esque affair that sits on the edge of a fairly grim valley where enormous industrial complexes sprawled all around. Did a tour of the castle, which was very interesting. A great place to play hide & seek given the chance. The castle was apparently re-built just over 100 years ago, but the owner died not long after and donated the castle for use as a public museum. It was just unfortunate that there was also a sprawl of market-type stalls all around the castle selling the biggest load of tat that we’ve seen by a long way. So we resisted the temptation to spend more euros (the cost of the car park was enough – for some reason the Slovaks seem very keen on very high car park charges which is in marked contrast to everywhere else we’ve been), and headed on to Cicmany. Curiously, we had a cup-of-tea stop in the hills on the way, where we witnessed another fly-past, this time of 8 buzzards. Will be heading further north tomorrow to get in amongst some of the more mountainy areas.
