Go, go Mo!
24th Jun 2012 - Central America
Hello!!

Sorry about not writing a blog yesterday, I have no excuse at all other than being very lazy and then being distracted in the evening when I'd normally write. I've had a few times when I write a blog and then a few hours later I get mad at myself because I forget to tell you something awesome. It's pretty much impossible to get it all down. But... I remembered something I wanted to tell ya from my first day here. I was walking down the street and headed straight into a funeral procession. Funeral processions here consist of a car/hearse/SUV, all of the family members and friends walking silently behind it, and then another truck behind the people, carrying all of the flowers. So there I was, walking down the street and ran straight into them. I don't know what the protocol is for this sort of thing so I just stopped walking, faced the procession, and waited. It was sad. It was beautiful.

Yesterday I didn't really do much. I climbed to the top of the mountain that overlooks Antigua and took a few pictures, and then I walked around town a bit. There were musicians in the central park who were playing lots of Beatles cover songs with their flutes... I hung out by them for quite awhile and listened. Then I did some shopping. Around noon or 1pm, it started raining. Normal Antigua rain hits hard and fast and is over in a few minutes. Not this rain though... this stuff lasted for the next 9 hours. I headed back to my hostel and lazied around until about 7, when the rooftop bar opened. Me, a Brittish dude, a Swedish girl, a French girl, a Spanish guy, and two texans all hung out til the bar closed. (it sounds like the start to a pretty good joke, right?) After the bar closed (at 10pm) the bartender (Guatemalan) took us on our own private bar crawl. We smashed 7 people into his tiny Mazda and went to a few bars. A few of us were dropped off after 2 (me included) and some other people were out until 5am. Ha! It was really fun but I'm so glad I wasn't in that group, they all look like hell today.

So today I woke up and did some laundry (it's almost a daily thing). While I was hanging the clothes I noticed that there wasn't a cloud in the sky an all of the volcanoes were visible. Fuego has been pretty active still and I got a chance to see him burping ash today!! (not sure if that's the right term for what happened but it feels right so I'm using it.) I got some great pics and will try to post them.

After, I went back in town and walked around and took pictures. I decided against the volcano for today because I was worried the rain wouldnt let up in time ... Which sucks cuz it's sunny and bright outside ... but it's fine... I still have a few days.

I booked my shuttle to lake Atitlan for tomorrow and head there at 9am.. I'm staying innSan Pedro tomorrow night and probably Panajachel on Tuesday night. Then back here for Wednesday and Thursday nights and then a 4am shuttle to Guate City on Friday am. I'm relieved that I dont have to stay in the city that night. ANYWAYS, back to tomorrow and Tuesday. I haven't booked any hostels so I dont know the Internet situation there. I assume there's Internet (it hasn't been a real problem yet) but I just wanted to give you a heads up in case I go missing for 2 days.

I'm getting sad that my trip is almost over. I miss home and everyone who I love there, but I love it.

So hanging out with all of these other travelers has been eye opening. They pick on Americans like crazy. Yesterday I was told that American accents are "particularly grating" by the Brit. They also made fun of things we say and how we talk and there's a decent amount of teasing and mocking that I'm not convinced is good spirited. I just roll with it because what else can I do, but it's weird, you know? They're all nice people but... it's a weird thing.

Alright, time to go lay in the hammock and take a nap. If I think of more to say I'll write another later. :)

Next: Back from Lake Atitlan!
Previous: Antigua again!
