Los Angeles and the Psychic Cat...

We arrived in LA having managed to get past customs and immigration with all their stupid questions. Surprisingly I have nothing to do with Nazi Germany, and I have not once denied custody of a child to an american awarded with said custody. After that amusement it was on to the YHA in Santa Monica, which was good. Nice and clean and well organised. Having settled in we had a wander down to the...

Fiji and the laziness that ensued...

Its an effort to type this entry, we've got so used to doing nothing. Guess it needs to be done though, so here goes.We arrived at Nadi (pronounced Nandi), late afternoon to be welcomed by our travel agent who presented us each with a lei and got us on a bus to our hostel for the night. As it was late and we had to get the bus to the marina at 7.15 the following morning we had dinner and heade...

Auckland

Once again we arrived late at the camp site having been in our first proper rush hour traffic since Vietnam! To be fair it's the first time we've seen more than 2 cars together in New Zealand! So obviously Jess was having a major stress about all the "crazy people" who "can't drive for sweets"....at least i think that was what it was, i didnt quite catch the last bit.Having calmed the little b...

Hobbiton

We stopped at Hobbiton on the way to Auckland, unfortunately all the Hobbits seem to have moved! We had a wander about all the famous bits, like the party tree and Bag End as you do. Jess even made an effort to not look completely disinterested as i bored her with Lord of the Rings trivia on the way round. Our guide had lots of interesting stories to tell us about the filming, such as the O...

Rotorua

We arrived late afternoon, so we thought we'd have a look about town to get our bearings. As this was the chosen location for my Taiaha purchase we looked in all the craft shops and workshops. I found one, but couldn't bring myself to buy it just yet...still have more time!Hells gate was our first stop the following day, which is another Geothermal site, similar to craters of the moon, but con...

Taupo

We arrived in Taupo quite late again and got an early night.Next day we went to Taupo Hot Springs and Spa (the one we went to last time mam), which was great...at least till the bus load of english public school rugby team types turned up and ruined it for everyone. Luckily we had splashed out the princely sum of 1 pound to go in the private pools, which provided a snazzy place to hide till th...

Napier

We came, we saw, we had a coffee.Having arrived late and tried to find a cinema, failed to find a good film so rented dvd's, as is our habit at the moment!Next morning we booked ourselves onto a Penguin Recovery Workshop tour before heading off to the national aquarium. The national aquarium was pretty good and had lots of the beasties we'd been pestering on the barrier reef in there.
Wellington

Greetings again avid Gary & Jess watchers....you'll be thrilled to hear we have succesfully crossed the Cook Straights and made it safely to Wellington! Huzzar for us!We zoomed of the ferry on Sunday afternoon and went straight to the campervan park to get settled in, a quick trip to the supermarket for supplies and it was time to chill out with a couple of DVD's.The following day we decid...

Nelson and Marlborough

We arrived in Nelson and headed straight for the video shop to rent a couple of DVD's for the evening. Gary made the pop-corn which he's getting pretty good at. Jess sat and marvelled at the large numbers of converted buses in the camp site. The next morning we explored Nelson, popping into the town museum. As well as being the oldest European settlement in NZ, Nelson is also the birth place of...

West Coast

We emerged from fiordland via Wanaka, which is pronounced wa-na-ka, not wanka as my uncles brother found out...Whilst there we visitied the New Zealand Fighter Pilot's museum, which was strangely enough dedicated to fighter pilots from New Zealand. It was packed to the rafters which artifacts and actual working fighter planes like Hurricanes and Mustangs etc. Some very poignant stories as well...
